Artist Bartholomäus Traubeck has custom-built a record player that is able to “play” cross-sectional slices of tree trunks. The result is his art piece “Years,” an audio recording of tree rings being read by a computer and turned into music, much like a record player’s needle reads the grooves on an LP.what
The tree rings are actually being translated into the language of music, rather than sounding musical in and of themselves. According to Makezine, the custom record player takes in data using a PlayStation Eye Camera and a stepper motor attached to its control arm, and relays the data to a computer. Though the record player “interprets” rather than actually “playing” the tree trunk, as Gizmodo notes, the song still varies with each new piece of wood placed on the turntable.
Japanese scientists levitate objects by soundwaves coming out of ultrasonic speakers!
“The essence of levitation technology is the countervailing of gravity. It is known that an ultrasound standing wave is capable of suspending small particles at its sound pressure nodes and, so far, this method has been used to levitate lightweight particles, small creatures, and water droplets.
The acoustic axis of the ultrasound beam in these previous studies was parallel to the gravitational force, and the levitated objects were manipulated along the fixed axis (i.e. one-dimensionally) by controlling the phases or frequencies of bolted Langevin-type transducers. In the present study, we considered extended acoustic manipulation whereby millimetre-sized particles were levitated and moved three-dimensionally by localised ultrasonic standing waves, which were generated by ultrasonic phased arrays. Our manipulation system has two original features. One is the direction of the ultrasound beam, which is arbitrary because the force acting toward its centre is also utilised. The other is the manipulation principle by which a localised standing wave is generated at an arbitrary position and moved three-dimensionally by opposed and ultrasonic phased arrays. We experimentally confirmed that various materials could be manipulated by our proposed method.”

Haven’t really been on the positive side of life recently, which directly affects my inspiration and outlook. Bummer that I won’t be travelling to attend some kick ass festivals that are happening such as Sun and Bass, Outlook/Dimensions, Bass Coast, Fusion, Echo, and other bass related festivals.
Anyway, I’ve come across this tune a while ago and I think it’s about time I post it here. It’s a remix done by one of my favorite producers, Fracture.
Black Sabbath are back with the original line-up that originally ventured into the “darkness” of music and created what is known as heavy metal. Guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward haven’t released an album together since Ozzy’s dismissal from the band in 1979, due to his excessive drug use. However, the album recording went ahead without Bill Ward due to a “contractual dispute” and has been replaced by Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave‘s drummer, Brad Wilk. (Notice both drummers have the same initials 😛 )
The single ‘God Is Dead‘ is surprisingly good! It certainly feels as if it’s a track off one of my favorite albums, Paranoid.
